Why We Named It Gollm

The name is half ancient legend, half AI acronym — and entirely intentional. Here's the story behind Gollm.

Every product name tells a story. Ours tells two at once.

The Golem

In Jewish folklore, the Golem is a being brought to life from clay — animated by purpose, bound to its creator, capable of extraordinary acts on their behalf. The most famous version was the Golem of Prague, crafted by Rabbi Loew to protect his community. It had no will of its own, no desire to accumulate power. It simply acted — faithfully, tirelessly, on command.

We kept coming back to this image when we thought about what an AI assistant should actually be. Not a chatbot with opinions. Not an agent that does things behind your back. Something that acts for you, on your behalf, on your terms.

The word אמת — emet, truth — was said to be inscribed on the Golem’s forehead to give it life. Erase one letter, and it returned to dust. It existed entirely at the will of its creator.

That’s the relationship we want to build.

The LLM

The second half writes itself. Gollm is a Large Language Model — or rather, it’s built on one. The LLM is the intelligence underneath: the part that understands what you mean when you say “tell the team I’m running late” without needing to be told which app, which channel, or which team.

Put them together: Golem + LLM = Gollm.

Ancient purpose. Modern intelligence.

What the name commits us to

Naming something matters. It sets a constraint. Every time someone says “Gollm,” we’re reminded of what we promised:

  • It acts for you, not on its own agenda
  • It does what you tell it to, faithfully
  • It doesn’t accumulate power or make decisions you didn’t authorize
  • You can turn it off

That’s not just good product philosophy. As AI becomes more capable, it’s the only philosophy that makes sense.
